As Bilbo Baggins sang
The Road goes ever on and onWell we thought it would be fun to start this holiday by walking out of our door. OK the walk is only as far as Taffs Well Station
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow...
which is only a mile from our house. But it makes a change from getting into a Car or a Taxi at the start of our holiday. It makes this holiday something different - and I hope special.
It has also felt good to tell people who have asked where we are going that we are travelling today from Taffs Well to Paris!
Of course, there is not a direct train, this means changing at Cardiff Central and across London from Paddington to St Pancras to catch the Eurostar to Paris Gare Du Nord.
Being non-sporty people it was only ten days ago that we suddenly realised that travelling across London during the Olympics might not be the most sensible idea, but the trip was all booked before we realised they were taking place! Still I reckon the Hammersmith and City Line should not be to bad, I'll report later. Naturally we left plenty of time to cross London anyway, so it shouldn't be a problem even if there are big crowds.
Once in Paris the plan is to travel on RER Line D from Gare du Nord to the Gare de Lyon, the wonderfully helpful guy who calls himself The Man in Seat 61 has shared a video of the journey from one station to the other.
From there we have a short walk to our hotel (Novotel Paris Gare De Lyon) for the next two nights.
So that's the plan, I'll update how well it has gone when we arrive - not long now before we leave.
I like the Tolkien at to the beginning. Although if Bilbo had used Eurostar it might have been a very different book.
ReplyDeleteTrue Robin, though the political situation in Europe is ever so better than that in Middle Earth in Bilbo's day, there was an advantage in slower travel then. And so far we've not met any dragons :-)
